A prototype ballast filtration system will be installed on a working Great Lakes vessel and tested during routine operations. This work will attempt to exclude fish, algae, pathogens and other organisms from ballast, so they will not require later treatment or control after they have been released into the natural environment. This project:· directly addresses a major threat to ecosystem health;· bridges research and action;· tests a solution to an identified problem; and· is a collaborative effort of industry, academic institutions, policy makers and government. |
