Special Initiative |
The project team, which includes staff from the Northeast-Midwest Institute, Lake Carriers Association, Stolt-Neilsen Transport Group, and a team of scientists and engineers, will install a full-scale ballast treatment system on a working chemical tanker (M/V Aspiration), assess its biological and engineering effectiveness, and conduct a dock-side assessment of a new filtration-UV ballast treatment system. This system will be designed to treat all of the ship's ballast water by filtering and exposing incoming water to UV light. The assessment will include biological measures of bacteria, zooplankton and phytoplankton removal/kill; and evaluate operational characteristics such as particle removal, system dependability, the ability to remotely collect monitoring data, electricity usage, and the ability of ship staff to maintain the system. The dock-side tests will evaluate the biological and engineering effectiveness of a new filter and UV system designed for installation in high volume ballast operations. Similar biological and engineering tests will be conducted for this new filter as were conducted for the Algo-North system. |
