A team led by the University of Michigan’s Cooperative Institute for Limnological and Ecological Research will develop and test a new set of ballast water management practices to minimize the release of exotic species from vessels that enter the Great Lakes reporting no ballast on board (so-called NOBOB vessels). Specifically, the team will develop new practices to assist vessels that must take ballast on board in contaminated waters, new practices to minimize sediment in tanks, and new practices that can be undertaken in advance of entering the Lakes to minimize the risk of introducing new species. These practices will be evaluated for practicality and effectiveness by scientific investigations on working vessels.
