The ultimate goal of this project is the elimination of new introductions of invasive species into water of the Great Lakes and the halting of futher spread of species already introduced into the Great Lakes to other waters of North America. This project team will achieve three objectives: 1) provide the initial scientific basis for assessing the relative risk of vessels entering the Great Lakes based on the ports they have previously visited; 2) accelerate the development of rapid genetics tests to determine the content of the ballast tanks; and 3) create methods to identify the best places and strategies to stop the spread of invasive species beyond the Great Lakes into other waters.
