The proposed work is designed to lead to the elimination of aquatic invasive species and pathogen introductions from ocean ships entering the Great Lakes. The team will create a prototype information system that displays the location of Great Lakes-bound ships on a map interface, identifies the relative risk posed by each vessel to the Lakes, and provides a detailed profile of the vessel’s travel history, the vessel’s destination, ecological conditions at previous ports, the cargo onboard and its ownership, and who owns and operates the vessel. The team will host a workshop of potential users to determine what type of first generation system to deploy. Funds to support the development of that system may be sought in a subsequent grant request. Ultimately, such a system would support four different customer groups. It will allow shippers to make informed choices about which carriers to use. It will help carriers adjust ballasting practices based on advanced warning of conditions at ports of call. It will permit the Seaway corporations and government agencies to focus sampling and monitoring activities. Last, it can help receiving ports know the ecological and health risks of inbound traffic.
