General Guidelines |
The Great Lakes Commission and Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative will convene stakeholders, identify technical experts, assemble a project team, and prepare methods to evaluate different scenarios for physically separating the Chicago Waterway System (CAWS) from the Mississippi River. This initial effort will be followed by extensive analysis, information development, and outreach. This work is being prompted by the history of invasive species moving between the watersheds, the presence of two species of Asian carp that are present in the upper reaches of the Illinois River and believed to be present in the CAWS, and the opportunity to engage the entire region in developing solutions. The convening and planning phase will design a larger collaborative effort to develop options that promote economic development, recreational uses, and the biological security of the Lakes. |
